Pikachoose is a lightweight jQuery Image Gallery plugin, now including jCarousel. jCarousel integrates smoothly with PikaChoose to give your gallery simple and effective carousel. PikaChoose now has API hooks for integrating lightboxes and other things. Check out this howto on integrating Fancybox with PikaChoose.
